Internships

Being a Student Intern is
an Experience of a Lifetime!

We provide students with the opportunity to work alongside professional museum staff in a variety of focus areas. Internships provide students interested in history-related museum or archaeology careers a structured realistic work experience. All college or graduate school students are encouraged to apply. Internships at Historic St. Mary’s City are available year-round.

Focus Areas
The content/work project of the internship is arranged on an individual basis. Opportunities are available in any of the following museum departments:

  • Archaeology
  • Collections Management
  • Development
  • Marketing/Communications
  • Museum Administration/Management
  • Research
  • Education
  • Living History Interpretation (including costuming)
  • Information Technology

Compensation/Academic Credit
Intern positions at Historic St. Mary’s City are primarily unpaid with no housing, mileage, insurance, or other benefits provided. (On a case by case basis, some exceptions regarding housing and stipends may apply.) Historic St. Mary’s City has no authorization to grant academic credit. Students are responsible for completion of all necessary paperwork, approvals, and deadlines required by their institution for academic credit.

Eligibility
The HSMC Internship Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. The program is competitive so an above-average academic record is necessary. Candidates should be able to interact with the public, be creative and reflect a willingness to pursue projects with minimal supervision. Potential interns should submit an application and will be required to go through an interview process. The HSMC Internship Coordinator will determine if a current project is available to match both the museum’s and the potential intern’s needs.
