By volunteering at Historic St. Mary’s City you will:

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Tour Guides
Tour Guide volunteers conduct 2 to 4 hour site tours for school children and/or adult groups. Tours explore the commerce, government, religion, law and culture of the daily life of the first Marylanders and the native Woodland Indians. On-site training is provided.
1667 Brick Chapel
Chapel volunteers explain the story of the early Marylanders who founded the first Roman Catholic Church in English America (initiating the concept of religious toleration) and the archaeological find of the Calvert family lead coffins, including Chapel reconstruction. On-site training is provided.
Events
Event volunteers assist at museum events, lectures and concerts. Duties may include, but are not limited to, event planning and marketing assistance, set-up and take down, craft/demonstration assistance, customer service ambassador, receptionist and usher assistance.
The Maryland Dove
Volunteers on the Maryland Dove assist in the maintenance and repair of the tall ship replica of the Maryland Dove. Also assist in sailing and demonstrating 17th century style seamanship at off- site locations. No previous sailing or boat maintenance skills required.
Costume Shop
Volunteers assist in the Costume Shop to create, mend and detail the 17th century style clothing worn by site interpreters and guides. Basic sewing skills required. Knitters and embroiderers are also welcome.
Administration
Administrative volunteers assist in a wide variety of technical, IT, clerical and customer service duties such as production of marketing materials, data entry, membership maintenance, reception tasks and event preparation.
Public Programs
Volunteers assist the Education staff in developing, preparing, and implementing museum programs and events.
St. Maries Citty Militia
Militia volunteers demonstrate 17th century militia life, period costumes and weaponry on-site and at other historic sites. Visit the St. Marie’s Citty Militia website to learn more.
Garden & Grounds
Garden volunteers help to re-create and maintain on-site 17th-century and native landscapes and gardens.
Trails
Assists staff in maintaining museum on-site and wooded trails.
Visitor Services
Volunteers help greet and assist visitors at HSMC’s Visitor Center, The Shop at Farthing’s Ordinary, and St. John’s Site Museum.
Costumed Interpreters
Demonstrate the daily life of the first Marylanders at Town Center or the Godiah Spray Plantation sites. On-site training is provided.
Maintenance Projects
Assists staff in facility maintenance and rehab projects by donating painting, carpentry, masonry, electrical, and/or plumbing skills.
YOUTH INTERPRETER PROGRAM
The Terra Mariae Society is open to home-schooled youth between the ages of eleven and seventeen.
